Aims and Scope
The scientific journal Annales, Series Historia et Sociologia (Annals for Istrian and Mediterranean Studies) is published four times a year. The journal publishes original scientific articles in the field of social sciences and humanities, related to the study of history, culture and society of Istria and the Mediterranean, as well as comparative and intercultural studies, methodological and theoretical discussions related to these fields. The journal has a long tradition and is internationally recognized as one of the highest quality journals in the field of social sciences and humanities, which reflects in its inclusion in the world’s most important databases. In addition to the scientific quality, the journal also reflects a general accessibility for both authors and readers.

Open Access Policy
The journal provides immediate open access (diamond open access) to the scientific content under the license Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0). There are no fees or article processing charges (APCs) associated with publishing in the journal. Users may read, download, copy, adapt, distribute, print, search, or link to articles published on the journal website and use them for any lawful purpose without prior permission of the publisher or author.
All articles are published with the following description:
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
Preservation of Data and Open Access
The journal adhere to the principles of OpenAIRE and the FAIR data guidelines, ensuring that research outputs are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. Furthermore, all published content is permanently archived through the LOCKSS-PKP preservation system, and Digital Library of Slovenia (dLib), guaranteeing long-term accessibility and integrity. Printed copies of the journal are permanently archived at the National and University Library, Turjaška 1, 1000 Ljubljana, ensuring long-term preservation. This ensures that scholarly materials remain publicly available and citable over time, in alignment with best practices for open science and digital preservation.
Dissemination and Sharing of Article Versions
The publishers HSSP and IRRIS are committed to open scholarly communication and fully support the sharing of research outputs at every stage of the publication process. Authors are encouraged to make their work available on all commonly used platforms for academic dissemination, including ResearchGate, Academia.edu, institutional and personal repositories, Zenodo, and similar services.
The Author’s Original Manuscript (AOM) – the version submitted to the journal prior to peer review – may be shared freely and without limitation. Authors are welcome to post the AOM on personal websites, institutional repositories, academic networking platforms, and preprint servers such as arXiv, SocArXiv, or comparable platforms. It is recommended that the AOM be clearly marked as a version not yet peer-reviewed. Posting an AOM before or during submission is not considered a prior publication and does not affect eligibility for acceptance in HSSP or IRRIS journals. Authors are encouraged to increase the visibility of their research by making the AOM accessible at an early stage. Once the article is published, we recommend updating any postings with a citation and a link to the final, published version of the article – Version of Record (VoR), preferably using the article’s DOI.
The Accepted Manuscript (AM) – the version approved after peer review but before publisher formatting – can also be shared freely and immediately upon acceptance. As with the AOM, authors are encouraged to upload the AM to academic repositories and platforms mentioned above (excluding preprint servers, which are generally intended for pre-peer-reviewed versions). Including a full citation and a link to the VoR is advised once the final version becomes available.
We also actively encourage the sharing of the Version of Record (VoR) – the final, published version of the article – as it appears in the journal. Authors are welcome to disseminate the VoR across all platforms. For consistency and traceability, we advise retaining the complete article file (including cover page and any front matter), and including a clear citation and a link to the official publication, preferably via DOI. Sharing the VoR supports academic transparency, proper citation practices, and broad, unrestricted access to scholarly knowledge.
